Hard Times is an all-American restaurant/bar with a Western theme, complete with 17 pool tables, country music and bull horns. The menu lists salads, burgers and various ways to eat chili. At Hard Times, it's all about the chili. There are 4 types of chili to choose from: Texas style (spiciest), Cincinnati style (originally for the hot dogs), Terlingua Red (try it!), and vegetarian chili (surprisingly good.) You can order a "sampler" at no charge, which is a small sample of each of the four chilis. Hard Times serves food at Herndon's summer concert series, "Friday Night Live". They do not offer the Terlingua Red at FNL, but you can try any of the other three chili types. Inquire within to sign up for a free bowl of chili on your birthday.

Hard Times is the perfect spot when you want a low key meal that's spicey, cheesy or grilled. The variety isn't huge but if you like standard american fare you won't be disappointed...unless, of course, you want chili. Hard Times is known for their chili but I think that's their worst item on the menu. Pretty much all 4 varieties are flavorless, way too smooth and way too oily. Their nachos, grilled chicken, grilled buffalo wings, corn bread and fries are the highlights, not to mention the bottle of chili vinegar at each table! And a great beer selection. Highly recommended, but stay away from the chili!
